Vandetta is an electro-soul-R&B songstress driven by self-actualization and spreading good vibes through a fusion of beats, loops and lush harmonies. Her unique upbringing enables her to pull together inspirations from Motown soul to underground Asian hip-hop/electronic scenes and urban pop. From winning a talent competition at age 12, she has since performed at festivals in France (Gilles Peterson Worldwide Festival), Russia (V Rox Festival, Vladivostok), China (Concrete & Grass Festival, Shanghai) and Australia (BIGSOUND, Brisbane). She has released 2 EPs, Vandetta (2013) and Mindkiller (2017) with new music forthcoming on her imprint, Ownself Records. She is also part of audio-visual collective, Syndicate, and considered by pundits as Singapore’s “Queen of Soul”.
Born Vanessa Fernandez, Vandetta grew up loving music, influenced by her father and his siblings who sung and played at family gatherings. At twelve, she won a national talent show with her cousins from the church choir. Four years later, she joined the Singapore Repertory Theatre Young Company, performing in various plays and musicals. At eighteen she was part of one of Singapore’s most successful groups, Urban Xchange, that fronted a Coca-Cola campaign, led a hip-hop renaissance in the local music industry and were nominated for Best Singapore Act at the 2002 MTV Asia Music Awards. Vandetta is also known in some circles for her radio career, both as a presenter and station manager for youth/pop station, 987fm from 2006-2010 and the now-defunct progressive radio station, Lush 99.5FM, til 2017, which championed local art and music from Singapore.
